Are the Las Vegas Raiders set to sign Philip Rivers?

Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers agreed to part ways last month after 16 years together.

Although his 2019 campaign was not stellar, Rivers is still widely regarded as one of the league’s better quarterbacks. As such, there figures to be a decent-sized market for him once free agency officially commences on March 18.

To date, the Indianapolis Colts appear to be the favorites to ultimately come away with Rivers. He has ties to the coaching staff dating back to all their days in San Diego, and the Colts are desperately seeking a Jacoby Brissett alternative.

That said, an interesting new candidate for Rivers’ services has emerged. That candidate? The Raiders.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Las Vegas looms “as an interesting option” for the former Charger. It seems like between Rivers and Brady, the Raiders have their hearts set on replacing Derek Carr with a veteran quarterback.

Despite Las Vegas’ interest in obtaining Rivers, Rapoport still believes that the Colts “make the most sense” for the 38-year-old.

Rivers’ track record speaks for itself. After being taken fourth overall by the New York Giants in 2004, he was ultimately traded to San Diego the very same day.

From there he sat behind Drew Brees for a couple of years and then eventually got bumped up to the stating spot in 2006. He never missed a game after that.

Over the course of his tenure with the Chargers, Rivers led the organization to six postseason showings. In that time, he also make the Pro eight times and led the NFL in each notable passing category at minimum on one occasion.

In 2019, Rivers recorded 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. Those numbers are some of the worst of his career. That said, many are attributing the decline to the general messiness of Los Angeles’ offense last season.

Rivers’ strong 2018 campaign seems to be an indicator that he still has a decent amount left in the tank.

Where will he ultimately end up in 2020? We are less than a month away from finding out.
