Washington Wizards Win 2026 NBA Draft Lottery: First Number One Pick Since John Wall

The Washington Wizards won the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery and will pick first overall for the first time since they took John Wall in 2010. Washington had a 14 percent chance to win the top pick, tied with Brooklyn and Indiana for the best odds, and the ping pong balls finally bounced their way. The rebuild in DC just got a major shot in the arm.

The full top four came out to Washington at one, Utah at two, Memphis at three, and Chicago at four. The Clippers landed at five via a trade with the Pacers. Brooklyn got six, Sacramento got seven, Atlanta got eight, Dallas got nine, Milwaukee got ten, Golden State got eleven, Oklahoma City got twelve, Miami got thirteen, and Charlotte got fourteen.

For the Wizards, this is a franchise-changing moment. Washington has been one of the worst teams in the NBA for the better part of two years, intentionally tanking through trades and roster moves to put themselves in this position. The reward is the chance to draft a foundational player and finally start building something real.

The 2026 draft class is not historically deep, but there are some real prospects at the top. Whoever the Wizards take is going to be expected to be the face of the franchise immediately. That is a lot of pressure on an 18 or 19 year old, but it is also the kind of opportunity that great players seize and run with.

The interesting subplot is what Washington does with the rest of the roster. Kyle Kuzma is still on the books. Jordan Poole is in the rotation. There are veterans on the team who do not really fit the timeline of a rebuild centered around a top overall pick. The front office is going to have to make some hard decisions about who stays and who gets moved this summer.

For Utah and Memphis, the second and third picks are great consolation prizes. The Jazz have been rebuilding for years and have stockpiled draft assets to do exactly this. The Grizzlies are an interesting case because they were not supposed to be a lottery team this year, but the Ja Morant situation and injuries derailed the season. Now they get to add another piece to a young core.

The Chicago Bulls at four is the team that nobody is sure what to do with. The Bulls have been stuck in the middle for years. They have not been bad enough to get a top pick and have not been good enough to make real playoff noise. Landing at four gives Chicago a chance to add a real prospect, but the broader question of where this franchise is going has not been answered.

The Clippers at five is the most controversial result. LA traded for that pick from the Pacers, and it conveys at this slot regardless of where it landed in the lottery. The Clippers are operating like a team that thinks it can still compete, but they keep taking on long-term assets. The strategy is interesting if confusing.

One thing to remember is that the lottery is just the first step. Players have to choose to declare. Some of the top prospects are still weighing whether to stay in college. The deadline to withdraw from the draft and retain eligibility is May 27, and a few names could come off the board between now and then.

The 2026 NBA Draft is June 23 in New York. The Wizards have a little over a month to figure out who they want, and the entire league is going to be watching what they do. The franchise has not had a real face since John Wall left town. That changes in June.

For Washington fans, the future finally looks bright. That is a feeling that has been hard to come by in DC for a long time. The Wizards have a chance to draft a star. The next step is making sure they pick the right one.
