Kawhi Leonard Trade to Raptors Still on Hold Amid NBA Investigation

The Kawhi Leonard trade is real. It is just not official yet.
The Los Angeles Clippers agreed to trade Kawhi back to the Toronto Raptors in a package that also sent Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick east, along with a mountain of future draft picks. The Clippers get unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, second-round picks in 2030 and 2033, and a 2027 first-round swap.
But the deal is stuck. It cannot go through until the NBA finishes its investigation into whether the Clippers circumvented the salary cap.
What the Investigation Is About
The Clippers are under investigation for allegedly funneling money to Leonard through a $28 million endorsement deal with a green banking company called Aspiration. The theory is that the Clippers effectively paid Leonard extra money outside of his salary cap deal, which would be a serious violation of league rules.
If the investigation finds wrongdoing, the Clippers face penalties. That could include fines, draft pick forfeitures, or even harsher consequences. It also could impact Leonard directly, which is why the Raptors got a hedge in the trade agreement.
The “Assume the Risk” Clause
The Raptors reportedly agreed to “assume the risk” of any potential punishment tied to Leonard. That is unusual language for a trade agreement, but the reasoning makes sense.
Toronto wanted Kawhi. Kawhi wanted to be in Toronto. The Clippers wanted to move him. All three parties agreed to a deal. The only issue was the ongoing NBA case, and none of the sides wanted to wait indefinitely.
So Toronto essentially signed off on absorbing whatever the league eventually decides. If Leonard gets suspended or otherwise punished, Toronto pays the cost.
What Kawhi in Toronto Would Look Like
This is a homecoming. Kawhi led the Raptors to their only NBA title in 2019. He was the Finals MVP. He is beloved in Toronto for that championship, even though he left after one season to go to Los Angeles.
Now he is back. And this time, he is not a one-year rental.
The Raptors have Scottie Barnes as their franchise cornerstone. Adding Kawhi gives them a legitimate two-way star to pair with Barnes. That is a serious upgrade for a franchise that has been treading water since Kawhi’s departure.
The Health Question Never Goes Away
Kawhi is 34 years old. He has played a full 82-game season maybe twice in his career. His injury history is well-documented.
The Raptors are betting that they can manage his workload effectively enough to keep him available for playoff runs. That was the same bet the Clippers made, and it did not work out.
Whether Toronto can succeed where LA failed is the big question. Load management, medical care, and roster construction all have to work together. The Raptors have a strong medical staff and a coaching philosophy that supports playing time reductions. That helps.
The Clippers’ Perspective
Los Angeles is essentially getting a discount package for Kawhi. Ingram and Dick are useful pieces. The draft picks are valuable. But this is not a haul that transforms the franchise.
The Clippers are moving on. The Kawhi and Paul George era is done. They are turning the page and starting fresh with a mix of veterans and young pieces.
Whether that means the Clippers are officially in a rebuild or just retooling is not clear. But the ceiling on this franchise just dropped significantly.
The Timing Uncertainty
Nobody knows when the NBA investigation will end. It could be days. It could be months. That is a nightmare for both franchises.
The Raptors need Kawhi for training camp. The Clippers need to move on with their new roster. Every week the deal sits in limbo creates more headaches.
The league has motivation to wrap this up quickly. But investigations are investigations, and they proceed at their own pace.
The Cap Circumvention Question
If the NBA finds the Clippers circumvented the cap, the punishment could be severe. Voided contracts. Massive fines. Draft picks stripped. Whatever the league decides, it will set a precedent.
Other franchises are watching closely. If the Clippers get away with a light punishment, everyone will start looking for creative ways to add value to star players. If the punishment is harsh, teams will think twice.
Bottom Line
The trade is agreed to. The paperwork is not signed. The Kawhi Leonard homecoming is officially on hold.
Toronto fans should be patient. Their guy is coming back. It just might take a minute.
