Oilers' Connor McDavid Looking To Bounce Back After Cheating Drama

Connor McDavid is widely regarded as one of the best players in the NHL today.

Last year’s Edmonton Oilers run to the Western Conference Finals spoke volumes about both his potential and the squad’s general ceiling.

Because McDavid is seen by many as the face of the NHL, his unexpected cheating drama last year caught many off guard. Beyond just the implications for his relationship with girlfriend Lauren Kyle, it also made many wonder whether the lasting effects would impact McDavid mentally going forward.

Recently, the 25-year-old spoke to the media regarding a myriad of topics. While he steered clear of his personal life, he did acknowledge that the road forward hockey-wise wouldn’t be an easy one.

“We really only won one more game than we did in 2017,” McDavid said in an interview with NHL.com. “It feels like we were closer last year than the previous year, but it was one win. We still have a long way to go and we know that. It takes everybody and it takes all season long. I’m just looking forward to getting going, and being back here to see everybody.”

McDavid then pointed to the Colorado Avalanche as a team whose run he would love to emulate going forward.

“You look at little bit of what Colorado had, they had a lot of injuries, they had a lot of things go against them and they just took everything in stride and ultimately were the last ones standing,” he continued.

“It takes everybody, it takes a whole organization and it’s good to get everybody under one roof here.”

Given the drama and nonsense other prominent NHL players have gotten up to in recent years, McDavid is something of a golden boy by comparison.

There’s a reason why last year’s gossip was such a shock – and why many wondered if it would impact him mentally heading into 2022-23.

That said, he seems to be fine. McDavid is focused on the task ahead: winning a Stanley Cup.

Will he be able to get it done next season?

Time will tell.
