The Milwaukee Brewers have the best record in baseball and might still trade one of their All-Stars this winter.
Robert Murray of FanSided reported this week on The Baseball Insiders podcast that catcher William Contreras is a name to watch this offseason. Milwaukee could seriously consider dealing their three-time All-Star, and the reasoning is not about performance. It is about timing and roster construction.
Contreras is 28 and having another strong year. He is batting .268 with 12 home runs and 65 RBIs, and he is a top-tier defensive catcher who controls the running game and handles pitching staffs at an elite level. He is one of the best catchers in baseball, and Milwaukee has him under contract through next season on a very team-friendly club option ($14.5 million).
Here is the twist. Contreras will be entering his final year under contract in 2027. That means the Brewers have to decide between paying him market rate on an extension (probably four or five years at $25 million-plus per year) or selling high on his trade value now.
Milwaukee has a real reason to consider selling. They have 23-year-old catching prospect Jeferson Quero stashed in Triple-A. Quero is one of the top catching prospects in baseball, and if the Brewers believe he is ready to be a starting-caliber MLB catcher by 2027, they can afford to trade Contreras for a package that reshapes the roster while the value is highest.
The Brewers have always been shrewd about roster management. They have a real front office that thinks about long-term value, and they are not sentimental about star players. Josh Hader got traded. Corbin Burnes got traded. Contreras could be the next big name to move.
The teams that would be interested are numerous. Any contender with a shaky catching situation would call. The Cubs, Padres, Braves, and Blue Jays have all been mentioned in various offseason speculation. Any of those teams could put together a real package.
The counter-argument is that trading Contreras weakens Milwaukee’s win-now case. They are 82-51 with the best record in baseball. Their playoff position is locked in. They should be adding, not subtracting. That is the traditional way to think about a contending team.
But the Brewers do not think traditionally. Milwaukee is going to be here anyway. If they can trade Contreras for a package that keeps them competitive for the next five years while Quero takes over the catching, that is arguably better long-term planning than paying $25 million per year for a catcher entering his 30s.
Contreras has been a legitimately great player for Milwaukee. He has had walk-off moments, bat-flip highlights, and clutch October performances. He is a Brewers cult hero. That will not stop the front office from making the smart baseball decision.
Watch this space in November. If a team comes with a real offer, Milwaukee moves.
