Urban Meyer Emerges As Coaching Candidate For 2 Schools

Urban Meyer served as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars for one ill-fated season in 2021.

It ended badly, and many assumed his poor performance would put the kibosh on his head coaching career once and for all.

As it turns out, though – that may not actually be the case.

According to Dan Patrick, one of the most respected sports radio hosts of all time, a source informed him of two potential landing spots for Meyer.

The schools in question: Nebraska and Arizona State.

“I had some correspondence with my college football source,” he said.

“We were talking about Meyer, I said, ‘Could you see Meyer going back into coaching?’ You know what my source said? ‘[Executive producer Paul Pabst’s] on to something with Nebraska.’ … Let’s say Nebraska could be in play for Meyer. Maybe.”

Patrick then dropped ASU as the other potential vacancy that Meyer could fill.

Presently Scott Frost is Nebraska’s head coach and Herm Edwards is serving at the helm of Arizona State.

Neither man’s job is particularly secure.

Frost has gone 15-30 in five years at Nebraska, while under Edwards Arizona State is 25-18 over four seasons, with three bowl appearances.

The writing is on the wall for both – it’s just a question of whether Meyer will really be the guy to step in and fill either one of those holes.

Meyer is an immensely successful college football coach. Over the course of his almost 20-year run starting with Bowling Green and ending with Ohio State he went 187-32, got to 14 bowl games and won three national championships.

That said, he has also had his fair share of issues. Between his infamous lap dance video, the alternate angles showing precisely where he was inserting his hand and subsequent claims of improper text messages and a worse unreleased video — he has been on the wrong side of a lot of bad stuff.

And that’s to say nothing of the 31 players who were arrested during his time at Florida or the fact that he had to “retire” from Ohio State over the allegation that he knew about a member of his coaching staff, Zach Smith, abusing his wife.

Nebraska and Arizona State are both down bad. Both need new coaches.

But is Meyer really the right guy to lead either program?

Time will tell.
