The Cleveland Browns’ decision to acquire Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans signaled the end of Baker Mayfield’s run with the franchise.
In the beginning, there was optimism from all sides that a trade could get worked out in a reasonable and timely fashion. Mayfield expressed a strong desire to land with one particular squad, and the assumption at the time was that something would get worked out.
It didn’t.
Now Mayfield is stuck in no man’s land. One major red flag continues to block a prospective deal, and at the moment at least, it’s hard to see that changing in the foreseeable future.
In a recent conversation, one NFL executive told Fansided’s Matt Lombardo that there’s a clear favorite for Mayfield’s services: the Seattle Seahawks.
“There’s no doubt that Baker Mayfield is Seattle’s best option,” the exec said. “He’s only 26 years old. Is he a headstrong guy? Is he a prideful guy? Absolutely, bigger than life, and that’s alright. Pete Carroll can corral that in. That’s what he’s good at.”
Mayfield comes with some issues. There is no denying that. All the drama over the past few weeks involving a woman seemingly leaking his intimate DMs is the perfect example of the nonsense that often accompanies him.
Moreover, the fact that so many of his old Cleveland teammates hate him isn’t a glowing endorsement.
That being said, he is not a bad quarterback. Mayfield was as good a passer as the Browns have had in a long time. Granted, that’s not a high bar – but still.

Mayfield could help certain teams out a lot. And the Seahawks are definitely one of those teams. He would be a clear upgrade over Drew Lock.
Time will tell if Seattle ultimately pulls the trigger on this move. But if they do, they’ll be better off for it.
