Panthers Rookie WR Chris Brazzell II Out for the Season After Knee Surgery

The Carolina Panthers cannot catch a break at wide receiver, and their 2026 rookie class just took a huge hit.

Third-round pick Chris Brazzell II will undergo season-ending surgery on a torn lateral collateral ligament in his left knee, the team announced Thursday. Brazzell hurt the knee during a 7-on-7 drill this week. Initially the team thought he might miss up to eight weeks, but a second medical opinion confirmed that surgery was the best course of action.

The injury happened on a non-contact play, which is always the most frustrating kind. Brazzell was carted off the field after being unable to put weight on his left leg. Panthers fans watching that scene were bracing for the worst, and the follow-up news confirmed it.

This is the second season-ending injury for a Panthers rookie already in training camp. Outside linebacker Nic Scourton tore his ACL on the first day of camp last Thursday. Two rookies gone before the preseason even really got going. That is brutal luck for a franchise that already has a lot going wrong.

Brazzell was expected to be an important developmental piece in Carolina’s rebuilding wide receiver room. The Panthers have been searching for pass-catching help around Bryce Young for two years now, and their draft investments in the receiver position have not always panned out. Losing a third-round pick before he plays a single game is a real setback for the roster building process.

The Tennessee product had shown some real burst in early workouts, per reports from Panthers camp. He was already climbing the depth chart and generating some optimism. Now that opportunity gets pushed to 2027 at the earliest, and there is no guarantee he will bounce back the same after surgery.

Non-contact knee injuries during 7-on-7 drills are becoming a recurring problem across the NFL, and there is no easy answer for how to prevent them. Players cut hard and change directions constantly during those drills, and any time the foot plants awkwardly, bad things can happen. Some of this is just the physics of the sport.

For Bryce Young specifically, this is another blow. The Panthers quarterback has been trying to develop chemistry with a rotating cast of receivers since he entered the league. Every time a new pass catcher gets some traction, either injury or free agency takes them away. It is hard to build a passing game under those conditions.

The immediate impact is that undrafted rookie Jimmy Horn Jr. and second-year player Jalen Coker probably see more early opportunities in the preseason. Dave Canales and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik will need to figure out how to keep the wide receiver depth chart functional without Brazzell.

For Carolina, this training camp is starting to feel like a bad omen. The Panthers already had huge questions about their roster heading into 2026. Losing two rookie contributors in the first ten days of camp makes those questions bigger.

Brazzell will have another shot next year. He is only 22, and lateral collateral ligament surgeries generally have good recovery outcomes. He should be able to return to full strength for the 2027 season. That does not help Carolina in 2026, but it at least gives Brazzell himself a real future to work toward.

Panthers fans need to hold their breath for the rest of camp. This roster cannot afford any more losses.
