The Green Bay Packers have a cornerback situation on their hands, and something is going to give before Saturday’s roster cutdown deadline.
Per multiple reports, Green Bay is actively shopping cornerback Carrington Valentine ahead of the August 30 cut date. The Packers have too many cornerbacks and not enough roster spots, and Valentine has surfaced as the most tradeable name in the group. Head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst are trying to turn that surplus into an actual asset.
Valentine, a seventh-round pick in the 2023 draft, has been a pleasant surprise for the Packers. He has started 20-plus games over his first two seasons, he has flashed real coverage ability, and he is on a cheap rookie contract. Any team that needs cornerback help, and there are plenty of them, would happily give up a mid-round pick for a young, cost-controlled starter.
The reason he is on the block is math. The Packers used draft capital on cornerbacks this offseason, they still have Keisean Nixon and Jaire Alexander atop the depth chart, and their defensive scheme under coordinator Jeff Hafley requires versatility they clearly believe they have without Valentine.
Trading him would net the Packers a draft pick, clear a roster spot for a younger developmental player, and let them move on with the cornerback room they have already invested in.
The team has been open about the trade possibility for weeks. Nixon, in particular, has been mentioned in trade rumors himself, but the Packers appear to have settled on him as the veteran presence they want to keep. That leaves Valentine as the odd man out.
For Valentine, a trade could actually be a career boost. A team like the Green Bay Packers, deep at his position, might limit him to a rotational role. On a team with a bigger opening, he could immediately become a starter and start earning bigger paydays in future contract negotiations.
Around the league, teams like the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, and even the Carolina Panthers could use secondary help. Each of those franchises has issues at cornerback. Valentine’s price tag, in the form of a mid-round pick, is exactly the kind of trade that gets done at the end of August.
The Packers’ broader roster picture is fascinating. Green Bay is trying to build around Jordan Love as he enters his prime, and the front office has been aggressive in every area of the roster. Draft picks are currency. Trading a role player like Valentine for a future Day 2 pick fits that mold perfectly.
Cutdown day is always the most chaotic day of the NFL offseason. Trades cascade. Waiver claims fly. Teams that thought they had roster clarity suddenly need to plug holes. Valentine getting moved before all of that happens would be a shrewd bit of business by Green Bay.
Expect this to be resolved one way or the other by Friday. Either Valentine gets traded, or the Packers keep him and figure out the roster math another way. Either way, the cornerback room is going to look different a week from now.
