McKayla Maroney is widely recognized as one of the most influential American gymnasts of the past 30 years.
To start, her role within the infamous “Fierce Five” crew that won the United States multiple gold medals was absolutely integral.
Maroney secured a silver medal in the individual vault and took home gold in the team competition at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Just as importantly, though – Maroney also paved the way for gymnasts today to be social media influencers in a way they previously could not be.
There is a fair case to be made that LSU star Olivia Dunne owes a lot of her success to Maroney.
These days, any time Dunne shares wild photos of her out partying, it becomes a national news story. Ditto for the “Olivia Dunne of skateboarding” Sterre Meijer, whose racy pictures went viral this week. But before them, it was Maroney who melded the worlds of competitive gymnastics and the larger cultural zeitgeist. She was the original gymnastics celebrity it-girl.
Over the past decade Maroney has amassed a major following across various social media platforms. As a result of it, any time she posts anything it immediately sets the internet ablaze. And that is precisely what happened this week.
In a series of now viral posts, Maroney shared her provocative weekend outfit. Fans absolutely loved it.
This obviously isn’t the first time in recent weeks that Maroney has blown up online in this particular fashion. Between her wild outfit to the Grammys, provocative elevator video and memorable gym workout video, it has been one thing after another with her.
In many ways, her melting the internet this weekend was just par for the course.
Maroney had a massive 2022 campaign, and all signs point to her being even more successful in 2023.
What will Maroney ultimately go viral for next? Time will tell.
