McKayla Maroney became a worldwide sensation more than ten years ago as a key member of the Team USA women’s gymnastics team.
Serving as an integral part of the memorable “Fierce Five” squad, Maroney captured a gold medal in the team event and a silver medal in the vault at the London Games. Her reaction to that latter accomplishment, one where she was clearly hoping to take home the top prize, is what led to the photo that ultimately turned her into a viral legend:
In the years since then Maroney has retired from competitive gymnastics, but simultaneously built up a massive social media presence. At the moment, she is one of the biggest influencers in the game without even really trying to be.

Maroney’s ability to effortlessly keep herself in the news is truly impressive. And it’s not as easy as it may look from the outside. When her ex-teammate Aly Raisman’s once upon a time tried to publish racy content, the response was very different. The vibe just wasn’t right. It didn’t hit the same.
Maroney knows precisely which notes to hit, though. She has a very bright social media influencer career ahead of her in the coming years.
