Victor Wembanyama Reveals Reason Gregg Popovich Yelled At Him
Victor Wembanyama’s second career NBA regular season game, much like his first, had its fair share of ups and downs.
After finishing with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, five rebounds and one block in his first outing, Wembanyama put up 21 points on 7-of-19 shooting, 12 rebounds and three blocks in his second.
The good thing about Wembanyama’s second game was that he didn’t get into foul trouble this time around. The bad? He couldn’t hit a three to save his life. He went 0-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Fortunately, it didn’t end up mattering. After losing to Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, the Spurs bounced back and beat the Houston Rockets 126-122 in overtime on Friday.
One of the interesting things that wound up occurring in this one was that it marked the first time Gregg Popovich openly screamed at Wembanyama during a game.
Afterward, the youngster was asked about why Popovich was so livid.
“I forgot one play that we added today actually,” Wembanyama said.
“So, it’s a rookie mistake. 100 percent legitimate for him to yell at me in that moment and I apologized after the game.”
Beyond that, Wembanyama also took a moment to address getting his first real win in the NBA.
“I really, really love winning,” he said. “It’s what I love most in life. Of course, it felt great. But coming back in the locker room, [Coach Popovich] acknowledged that it was my first-ever NBA win and it just made me proud… It’s just one win. We got a whole lot more to come, and a whole lot more tough games to come, so focus on the next one. But I’m still very proud.”
Obviously Wembanyama’s photo with Malika Andrews caused something of a stir last week, but this is the first time he is trending for his actual on-the-court NBA achievements.

The future looks bright in San Antonio.
Will Wembanyama be able to guide the Spurs into the playoffs this year? Time will tell.
