Doc Rivers was brought on as the new head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks this week.
After sending Adrian Griffin packing, Milwaukee’s front office moved quickly to secure a championship-decorated, big name in Rivers.
Rivers’ new contract will keep him with the Bucks through the 2026-2027 NBA season and will reportedly pay him approximately $40 million.
This week, while speaking to reporters, Rivers identified why precisely the Bucks brought him on board and what he perceives the team’s biggest weakness to be.
“I think we have to find our identity. Like if you’re gonna have Fear the Deer, you gotta fear the deer,” Rivers said, per Eric Nehm of The Athletic.
“I asked them, ‘Who are we?’ When a team is connected and they got it, they’ll give you an answer. We don’t have an answer yet. We gotta find what are we, who are we.”
Before the season began Milwaukee acquired Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers.
Lillard has been great, but he does seem a bit distracted. Maybe it is how messy his divorce has gotten. Maybe it is the allegations that have been made against him. Or maybe it is something else entirely.
But thus far, Lillard’s fit in Milwaukee hasn’t been as smooth as what many envisioned.
Complicating matters further is the fact that, in order to get Lillard, the Bucks shipped out their best perimeter defender in Jrue Holiday.
While that hasn’t hurt them too badly in the regular season, yet, it may down the line when the playoffs roll around.

Rivers’ struggles in the postseason are also a matter of public record.
It will be interesting to see how this group ultimately winds up faring.
Will the Bucks and Rivers be able to shock the world and win an NBA title this season? Time will tell.
