Dillon Brooks is one of the NBA’s most polarizing characters.
The Houston Rockets enforcer has taken a page from Patrick Beverley’s book in recent years and has leaned into the role of being the ultimate teammate. What does that entail? It means he essentially will never compliment someone who isn’t on his squad.
That used to be his schtick with the Memphis Grizzlies until they quit on him, and now he is playing up the same thing in Houston.
This week, Brooks was asked about San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama. Most around the NBA have been effusive in their praise of the young star.
Not Brooks, though.

“He’s tall, that’s really it,” Brooks said during a recent session with the media.
Brooks is never one to shy away from conflict. There is a reason Austin Reaves despises him and Los Angeles Lakers fans forced him to do a walk of shame from the arena when their squad beat the Grizzlies in the playoffs last season.
But he has his positives as well.
Brooks is obviously a very tenacious defensive player and someone you would rather have on your side than fighting against you.

Is he often prickly for no reason? Sure. Does he play up his schtick a little too much, to the point where it becomes kind of corny? Definitely.
But it has worked for him thus far. There is a reason he got a four-year, $80 million contract from Houston this summer.
Will Wembanyama ultimately use this year’s Spurs-Rockets games to show Brooks there is more to his game just height, though? Absolutely.
