DeMarcus Cousins was one of the most impactful big men of his generation at one point.
Unfortunately, injuries robbed him of most of his abilities and he was forced to cut his NBA career much shorter than anyone expected he would.
As a result, Cousins is very familiar with the health woes the league’s big men face.
This week, Cousins offered some blunt health advice to Philadelphia 76ers star and the NBA’s reigning MVP, Joel Embiid.
“When it comes to Joel in general, we’ve seen this story happen over and over and over again,” Cousins said.
“For me, at what point do you start taking the pressure off of those knees and joints and ankles? Age is starting to get on your side, so there has to be some type of adjustment.”
From today’s Bully Ball: Boogie Cousins says to be less injury-prone, Joel Embiid needs to follow in Tim Duncan’s footsteps & slim down as he gets older: “He’s gotta come down in weight. It’s hard to play at 300+ pounds every night, the wear & tear will get the best of you” pic.twitter.com/GRBp0e2i5Y

“I feel like, at some point, the big fella has to come down in weight. … It’s hard to play with 300-plus pounds every night. That wear and tear, eventually, is going to get the best if you,” Cousins continued.
“If he can’t get his health under control at some point, it’s always going to be the same story that we’ve been talking about where he’s injured in the playoffs.”
Will Embiid heed Cousins’ words of caution and try to come down in weight a bit this offseason? An answer one way or the other is coming soon enough.
