Braves Emerge as Frontrunner for Tarik Skubal at MLB Trade Deadline

The 2026 MLB trade deadline is going to be defined by one name: Tarik Skubal. And according to multiple insiders, the Atlanta Braves have emerged as the clear frontrunner to land the two-time defending American League Cy Young winner.
Bob Nightengale first reported that rival executives view Atlanta as the favorite, and the reporting has been steadily building. Skubal is the biggest arm on the market and possibly the biggest trade chip since Juan Soto was moved from San Diego a few years back.
The fit makes sense on paper. The Braves need starting pitching. Spencer Strider is on the injured list again. Bryce Elder has been up and down. Chris Sale is still one of the best pitchers in baseball when healthy but you cannot count on 30 starts. Adding Skubal turns the Atlanta rotation from vulnerable to elite.
The Braves also have the financial flexibility to take on the salary and the prospect capital to actually pay the price Detroit will demand. Names like Didier Fuentes, JR Ritchie, and Cam Caminiti keep coming up as potential trade chips. Any deal is going to be centered around at least one of those young arms.
Detroit’s calculus is interesting. Skubal is a free agent after 2026. The Tigers are going to be competitive again, but they might not be ready to win it all this year. Moving Skubal for a haul of prospects is exactly the kind of move a smart front office makes when the alternative is watching him walk for nothing.
The other teams in the mix cannot be ignored. The Dodgers always want another arm. The Yankees just had a brutal June and clearly need pitching. The Cubs are surprisingly in the mix. The Brewers could be a dark horse. But the Braves have the combination of need, resources, and prospect depth that gives them the edge.
Jeff Passan wrote earlier that the Braves should “swing big” for Skubal, and that framing gets at the heart of what is happening. Atlanta has been close to the top for years. This is the kind of aggressive move that pushes them from contender to true title favorite.
The catch is the return. Detroit is going to demand a huge package. If the Braves are unwilling to include their top prospects, someone else will. This is where the deal either happens or falls apart.
Skubal himself has said he is focused on pitching for Detroit and not thinking about the trade market. That is what he has to say. Every player on a rebuilding team going into a deadline says the same thing. The reality is that once the calendar hits mid-July, the noise becomes impossible to ignore.
Detroit going 8-13 or 10-11 in the two weeks before the deadline could change everything. If they play well, they might hold. If they slide, Skubal is gone. It is the classic trade deadline dance.
Book Atlanta as the favorite. The pieces are all in place. The next four weeks are going to be must-watch baseball.
