Mel Tucker’s Michigan State Contract Revealed

Mel Tucker’s Michigan State contract details were revealed on Wednesday evening.

Last week, former Spartans head football coach Mark Dantonio turned the football world on its head when abruptly quit. That forced Michigan State to scramble to find a replacement.

After being rejected by multiple candidates, including Tucker at first, the Spartans finally got their man.

On Wednesday morning, the school officially announced that Tucker would be their next head football coach.

Given that Tucker had initially turned Michigan State down, many have wondered what exactly the Spartans came back to the table with to make him change his mind.

Rumors circulated that perhaps Tucker was offered double his Colorado salary of $2.7 million. Other whispers suggested that he was given more financial leeway when it pertain to recruiting.

Well, ultimately we got our answer.

According to Associated Press insider Larry Lage, Tucker is getting $5.5 million annually and was signed toa  six-year deal.

Prior to this, Tucker was signed to a $14.75 million, five-year contract with Colorado. He ended up completing exactly one season of that.

Tucker ultimately came very highly recommended by both Dantonio and Alabama head coach Nick Saban, each of whom had extensive experience with him.

“My dream was to come back here and be the head coach,” Tucker said.

The 48-year-old originally started at Michigan State under Saban, before going on to have a very successful career across both college football and the NFL.
