Kirby Smart’s Reaction To Vanderbilt Firing Derek Mason
Vanderbilt fired head coach Derek Mason Sunday after the team was blown out 41-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The defeat was Vanderbilt’s eighth in as many outings this year and the final nail in Mason’s coffin.
Over the course of eight years at Vanderbilt Mason went 22-55.
On Monday, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart spoke out on the decision to let go of Mason.
“Unfortunate to get the news about Derek yesterday,” Smart said.
“He’s become a good friend. Guy I have a lot of respect for in this profession, the job he’s always done with his units when he was at Stanford. They’ve always played so hard at Vandy.
“I’ve gotten to know him in the offseason and taking a trip with some other coaches and his wife. I know the future will be bright for him, because he’ll have a lot of opportunities moving forward because he’s a really good football coach.
Up to this point the names being discussed to replace Mason include former NFL coach Jeff Fisher, Buffalo’s Lance Leipold, Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea, and Princeton’s Bob Surace.
Who will ultimately get the job? Time will tell.
