Brett Favre’s Troubling Text Messages Come Under Scrutiny

Brett Favre’s Troubling Text Messages Come Under Scrutiny

Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre is one of the greatest NFL players of all time. On the field, few in football’s history could match his toughness, talent and appeal to fans.

Unfortunately, Favre has experienced more than his fair share of issues off the gridiron.

The Jenn Sterger situation is obviously etched in the history books and speaks for itself.

But this week, Favre found himself in the headlines for a different kind of beast entirely.

According to Anna Wolfe of Mississippi Today, the Packers icon stands accused of utilizing his wide net of connections to collect taxpayer cash for groups of his choosing.

Favre allegedly leaned on his access to Mississippi governor Phil Bryant to access state welfare funds that were then directed towards organizations he promoted. The University of Mississippi’s $5 million volleyball court and in excess of $2 million being pushed towards a pharmaceutical company that Favre backed (Prevacus) were highlighted specifically.

Favre also purportedly received more than $1 million in welfare funds.

“In the course of his dealings on behalf of Prevacus or the volleyball stadium, Favre proposed the following: Give then-Gov. Phil Bryant shares in Prevacus, or transfer his own personal shares to the governor,” reported Mississippi Today.

“Give nonprofit founder Nancy New shares in Prevacus; Buy then-MDHS director John Davis a F-150 Raptor — Ford’s top-of-the-line pickup truck; Convince New and Davis to pay off more than $1 million he owed on the volleyball facility; Ask the governor for a meeting with the replacement MDHS director for more volleyball money; Convince USM to finance Prevacus in exchange for stock for himself; Aim to take home $20 million.”

While Favre has denied any wrongdoing, “text messages obtained by Mississippi Today show he knew he was dealing in government grants.”

All in all, this is a rough look for Favre. And it’s a scandal that doesn’t appear to be subsiding.

Because of his place in football lore, Favre often finds himself in the headlines. Whether he’s talking about athletes kneeling for the national anthem or the general role of politics in sports, everything he says is a big deal. That’s not new.

But obviously this situation is much different.

It will have very real and serious implications on a political and local level for a lot of different players.

How will everything ultimately turn out for Favre and all the other people implicated in this ugly mess? Time will tell.
