Stephanie White Comments on Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell Draw Fever Fan Backlash

Stephanie White cannot get out of her own way right now, and Indiana Fever fans are letting her have it.

After the Fever dropped a 106-92 game to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday at Crypto.com Arena, White answered a question about the pairing of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell in her postgame press conference. The answer was fine on paper. The reaction from Fever fans was not.

“I certainly think individually they’re really, really good, and collectively dynamic together,” White said. “I think that they make one another better.”

That is standard coach-speak. The problem is what the actual game looked like. Clark, returning from a two-game absence due to a back injury, played only 16 minutes on a minute restriction. She scored nine points on 4-of-12 shooting, went 1-for-6 from three, and turned it over four times. Mitchell went off for 29 on 9-of-18 shooting in 33 minutes.

The read from fans is that Mitchell got the runway to succeed and Clark got sat down. And the anger tracks. Clark is one of the most bankable stars in women’s basketball. Every minute she is on the bench is a minute the arena feels flat.

Fever social media replies immediately went after White. “They would be better with a new coach that understands what they have with CC,” one fan wrote. Others were harsher. “Stephanie White is a horrible coach, no matter how much she tries to gaslight everyone.” “She needs to be FIRED.”

Some of that is fan rage that never sticks. Some of it is real frustration with how the Fever have handled Clark’s usage since she was drafted. She is on a minute restriction for a back issue that most observers thought would be short-term. She played 16 minutes on Wednesday. That is not a light workload for someone who is supposedly the future of the franchise. That is barely enough to establish a rhythm.

The bigger picture is that Indiana was supposed to be a real threat this year. The Fever added around Clark. They brought in veteran help. They stayed healthy at the top of the roster for chunks of the season. And they are still under .500 with a coach that fans are already calling for the front office to fire.

White will not be fired mid-season. That is not how the WNBA operates. But if the Fever miss the playoffs or get eliminated in the first round, her seat is going to be one of the hottest in the league heading into next spring.

Clark will sit out Thursday’s game against the Phoenix Mercury at the Mortgage Matchup Center for a scheduled rest day. The team says she is progressing. Fans do not believe it. Every day this drags on is another day where the narrative around White gets worse.

The Fever have to figure out how to fix this or accept that a coaching change is coming. There is no in-between when your star player is the biggest name in the sport and your fans are already writing your coach’s obituary in July.
