Arnold Allen Outpoints Melquizael Costa in UFC Fight Night Main Event

Arnold Allen is back in the win column. The English featherweight contender turned in a workmanlike unanimous decision victory over Melquizael Costa in the main event of UFC Fight Night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, getting himself back into the title conversation in one of the deepest divisions in the sport.

The fight was not the most dramatic main event of the year. It was, however, exactly what Allen needed. The Brit controlled the distance from the opening bell, mixed in takedowns when Costa pressured him, and landed the cleaner shots in every round. The judges saw it the same way the people watching at home did.

The win is a real one. Costa came into the fight on a hot streak and was viewed by most observers as a live underdog. Beating him decisively the way Allen did sends a message to the rest of the featherweight division that he is still in the mix for a title shot, even if the recent losses to Max Holloway and Diego Lopes had pushed him down the pecking order.

The featherweight division is a mess in the best possible way. Alexander Volkanovski’s recent stretch has been turbulent. Ilia Topuria moved up to lightweight. The contenders behind them include Holloway, Lopes, Brian Ortega, and now Allen back in the conversation. The matchmaking for the next title shot is going to be one of the most complicated puzzles UFC matchmakers have had in years.

Allen has been around the top of the division for a while without ever quite breaking through. He took the loss to Holloway hard. The Lopes fight before that was another setback. The Brit has the skill set to beat anybody in the world on the right night, but the path to a title shot has been blocked by the depth at the top.

The Costa win does not put him at the front of the line, but it does keep him in the conversation. A win against another top-five featherweight would. The matchmakers will likely give Allen the opportunity to climb the rankings with one more high-profile fight before the end of the year.

The undercard had its own storylines. Doo Ho Choi, the South Korean veteran fan favorite, picked up a second-round stoppage win over Daniel Santos to extend his recent run of form. Malcolm Wellmaker and Alice Ardelean both earned Performance of the Night bonuses for their efforts.

The Apex shows have become their own thing in the UFC ecosystem. The crowds are smaller, the production is more controlled, and the fights tend to be more technical than the pay-per-view spectacles. For contenders trying to rebuild their case, the Apex is the perfect venue. Allen used it exactly the way it was designed to be used.

The Costa loss is a setback for the Brazilian, but not a career-defining one. He is still a top-15 featherweight with the skill set to bounce back. The fight just exposed the gap between the elite of the division and the contenders trying to break through. Allen made sure of that.

The bigger UFC picture continues to be the heavyweight title situation, the lightweight chess match between Topuria and Islam Makhachev, and the welterweight division reshaped by recent results. The featherweight division, as always, is one of the most technically interesting weight classes in the sport, and Allen vs Costa was a reminder of why.

For Allen, the next chapter is figuring out who he fights next. The UFC has options. A rematch with one of the contenders he has lost to would be a clear opportunity. A fresh matchup with a rising prospect would be another path. Either way, the win in Vegas has him back on the right track.

The featherweight division keeps moving. Arnold Allen just made sure he is moving with it.
