Trey Lance was supposed to officially take over as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback this past season.
While an ankle injury that would require two surgeries officially ended his year after Week 2, he also didn’t do a ton to evoke confidence in his skills up to that point.
Players at the time made it no secret who they preferred as their starter between Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, and history has repeated itself with Brock Purdy’s ascension.
Amid it all, in addition to dealing with all the questions that come when you’ve started in just four games since being a top-3 pick two years ago, Lance has also dealt with his share of girlfriend drama. A leaked video of him and some dancers didn’t help matters either.
Currently there have been two major questions facing Lance: does he still want to be in San Francisco and are he and his one-time girlfriend, Brynn, still together?
This week the 22-year-old addressed one of those questions as best he could.
“I love it here,” Lance said of San Francisco during an interview on “The Q with Quincy Avery” live stream. “I don’t want to be anywhere else.”
Lance was also asked about a social media incident where he seemed a little over-enthused when Ran Carthon was named the general manager of the Tennessee Titans. Some wondered if perhaps he was looking for an exit hatch given his rough run with the Niners and Purdy’s rise up the depth chart.
“Me and Ran got close,” Lance said.
“He’d bring his boys in and I’d talk to his kids. For me that was huge. It was like a shining light. Just getting to know someone’s family like that. I was super happy for him. The fingers crossed emoji wasn’t like, ‘cross my fingers emoji, I want to be a Tennessee Titan.’
“… That’s my #1 used emoji too. [Head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] told me the next morning, because we had an install meeting, Kyle asked me, ‘have you seen everything? People say you’re going to the Titans and stuff.’
“I go, ‘what are you talking about?’ And he goes, ‘I just saw it. People are talking crazy. They don’t know what they’re talking about. I just thought it was funny.’ He was the one who told me about it. I didn’t see anything.”
So based on all that, it seems clear that Lance still wants to work hard with the Niners and eventually assume his place as the franchise quarterback. One question – answered.
As far as his girlfriend stuff, though – that remains less clear.
Brynn has one recent post at a 49ers game from a few months ago, but zero mention of Lance.

And Lance, of course, never had any mention of her on his social media to begin with. Which stands in stark contrast to Purdy, whose sister’s and girlfriend’s wild photos have gone viral quite frequently over the past few weeks.
So it is unclear what the status of their relationship is at the moment, but it doesn’t look like there is any public connection there at all.

The 2022-23 NFL season obviously didn’t go the way Lance wanted it to.
Now, instead of having to beat Garoppolo for the starting gig going forward, he will need to beat Purdy. Will Lance be able to get it done? Time will tell.
