Stefon Diggs Free Agent Watch: Five Teams Checking In on Veteran WR

Stefon Diggs is still available in mid-July. That will not last much longer.

Multiple reports have surfaced this week that at least five NFL teams are checking in on the veteran wide receiver as training camps approach. Team executives across the league are seeking to bolster their receiving corps ahead of the season, and Diggs is the best pure receiver available in free agency.

What are teams getting? A 32-year-old wideout who was one of the most productive receivers of the past decade. Diggs has multiple Pro Bowl appearances, has crossed 1,000 receiving yards six times, and knows how to run a route tree in his sleep. His release off the line is still one of the cleanest in the sport.

The catch is health. Diggs tore his ACL in 2024 while with the Bills, worked back to play a partial season in 2025 with the Texans, and is now trying to prove he can be an every-down receiver again. His speed reportedly looks close to what it was. His route running never left. But teams want to see him in pads before they commit to a real number.

Which is why he is still available in July. Every team has interest at the right price. Nobody wants to commit big money before they see him practice at full speed.

Who are the five teams? Reports have named the New England Patriots, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Chargers among those making calls. That is a mix of contenders looking for one more piece and rebuilds looking for veteran leadership.

The Chiefs make the most sense on paper. Andy Reid always wants another receiver. Patrick Mahomes has never played with a receiver of Diggs’ pedigree. Adding him to Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy gives Kansas City a legitimate three-headed monster that would be a nightmare for defenses to cover.

The Steelers just brought in Aaron Rodgers to run the offense. He needs a No. 2 or No. 3 behind George Pickens. Diggs is exactly the kind of veteran Rodgers has thrived with in the past. That fit is real.

The Packers pitch is more speculative. They have young receivers already. They need contested-catch veterans and route runners who can help Jordan Love in the red zone. Diggs is that guy on the right day. Not a splash signing, but a smart supplementary piece.

The Chargers need weapons around Justin Herbert. That has been their offseason project. Adding Diggs to Ladd McConkey and the incoming Ohio State receivers gives them three legitimate threats. It is not a No. 1 receiver signing, but it is a No. 2 receiver at a bargain price.

The Patriots pitch is a rebuild. Drake Maye needs a veteran security blanket. Diggs would provide that. It is not the most exciting fit for Diggs, but the money might be right.

What is Diggs looking for? Probably a one-year prove-it deal with real incentives. Maybe two years with a team option. He wants to prove he can still play at a high level. He also wants to end his career on his terms, not on the terms of a knee injury that took him out of a game.

The deal is going to happen soon. Every team going into camp without their receiver rotation set is going to make one more phone call. Diggs is a phone call away for all of them.

Pick a team, Stefon. The season is coming.
