Ricky Pearsall Out for 2026 Season After PCL Surgery: 49ers Wide Receiver Depth Takes Another Hit
San Francisco 49ers third-year wide receiver Ricky Pearsall has been ruled out for the entire 2026 season after undergoing PCL surgery. The team announced the news this week, and the timing could not be worse.
Pearsall was supposed to be a big piece of the 49ers’ passing game this year. Brandon Aiyuk missed most of last season with his own injury issues, Deebo Samuel is now in Washington, and Pearsall had emerged in the second half of 2025 as a legitimate No. 2 target next to Aiyuk. Losing him for the year leaves Kyle Shanahan with a receiver room that is thin in a way this offense has not been in years.
Jauan Jennings is still a physical presence. Chris Conley is a veteran addition who can play in the slot. Ronnie Bell is developing. But there is nobody left with Pearsall’s route running and separation ability, which is exactly what Brock Purdy needs on quick-game passing plays.
This is the second season-ending injury Pearsall has had in his short career. He was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt before his rookie season even started in 2024, missed the first several games recovering, and then had a stop-and-start rookie year. He finally seemed healthy last season, and now this.
The PCL injury reportedly happened during a training camp practice earlier this week. It is a non-contact injury, which fits the broader theme of the 2026 NFL preseason. Teams around the league have watched star players go down without contact in the last two weeks, and the injury numbers are already ugly compared to a typical August.
What this means for San Francisco is that Kyle Shanahan is going to have to lean on Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle more than ever. The passing game is going to be shorter, more RPO-based, and more dependent on the tight end and the running back winning matchups against linebackers.
The 49ers were already a fringe playoff team on paper before this injury. They lost to a wave of injuries last season and finished 9-8, missing the postseason for the first time under Shanahan. Losing Pearsall makes an already-tough NFC West path significantly harder.
General manager John Lynch has to consider whether the 49ers should be aggressive on the trade market or waiver wire for a veteran wide receiver. Somebody like a Michael Gallup or a Darius Slayton could be available at the right price. But whatever they add is not going to make up for the loss of a young, ascending receiver like Pearsall.
Personally, this is heartbreaking for Pearsall. He has already survived a life-threatening situation to make his NFL career happen. Now he has to spend another year rehabbing while his career development pauses. The kid deserves better luck.
The 49ers’ medical staff will get him healthy for 2027. San Francisco will figure out a way to be competitive this year. But this was supposed to be Pearsall’s breakout season, and instead it becomes another year lost.
