Ricky Pearsall Out for 2026 Season with PCL Surgery: What This Means for 49ers Offense
Ricky Pearsall’s 2026 season is over before it started. The San Francisco 49ers announced that their third-year receiver will undergo season-ending surgery to repair his PCL and be placed on injured reserve.
Team president John Lynch broke the news, laying out a recovery timeline that will keep Pearsall out until the 2027 season. Typical PCL surgery recovery is six to 12 months, with Lynch saying the team is targeting the nine-month mark as a realistic return window.
The injury actually traces all the way back to Week 4 of last season, when Pearsall got hurt in a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He tried to play through it for the rest of the 2025 season, missed all or part of 10 games, and looked like a shell of himself when he was on the field.
The 49ers made a call in the offseason to skip surgery, hoping rest and rehab would be enough. That plan fell apart during training camp when swelling returned and doctors determined that surgery was the only real option left.
This is a punch to the gut for a 49ers offense that needed Pearsall to take a leap in year three. He was expected to slide into a starting role and provide a bigger downfield target for Brock Purdy in an offense that lost Deebo Samuel in the offseason. Now that plan is dead.
Or is it? Because San Francisco immediately turned around and re-signed Deebo Samuel, who was rejoining the team just as Pearsall was heading to IR. Samuel’s return fills the roster spot and gives Kyle Shanahan back one of the most creative pieces in his offensive toolbox.
The Samuel signing changes the entire calculation. San Francisco was going to have to figure out how to replace Pearsall in the passing game. Instead, they got a Pro Bowl playmaker back on a short-term deal. The 49ers get to run their offense the way they’ve always wanted to, with Deebo motioning across the formation, Christian McCaffrey out of the backfield, and Brandon Aiyuk lined up on the outside.
Brock Purdy has to be relieved. Pearsall was supposed to be the release valve when Aiyuk got doubled, and losing him would have squeezed Purdy in obvious passing situations. Deebo brings back the after-catch magic that made the 49ers offense one of the most creative in football during their run to Super Bowl 58.
For Pearsall, the timeline is brutal but at least clear. He is 24 and has time to recover. PCL surgeries have a reasonable success rate, and he should be able to hit the ground running at 2027 training camp. The lost year hurts, especially for a player who has yet to have a fully healthy season in the league.
The 49ers’ bigger issue is that this is another injury on a roster that keeps losing pieces. Chris Brazzell of the Panthers, Nic Scourton, and Bryan Bresee of the Saints all landed on season-ending IR this week. Pearsall’s news is another data point in what has been a brutal preseason around the league.
San Francisco will move on. Deebo is back. McCaffrey is healthy. Purdy has plenty of options. But another wasted season for Pearsall is a reminder that the 49ers first-round pick from 2024 has yet to show anyone whether he is a legit NFL contributor or just a highly drafted question mark.
