Panthers Say Goodbye To Another Star
The Panthers are saying goodbye to another star this week.
Fresh on the heels of tight end Greg Olsen departing, the organization is now losing someone else.
In an Instagram post, veteran defensive end Wes Horton announced he was done.
“I’ve been back and forth on my future playing football and after coming to a conclusion I will be stepping away from the game of football,” he wrote.
“I’ve made this decision off two reasons. The first is my overall health.
“The little injuries I’ve accumulated over the years have finally caught up to me and when weighing the risk, I’d rather preserve what’s left of my body.
“Second reason being the conviction Christ has put on my heart to help teach and mentor the next generation.”
Horton’s next move will be transitioning to coaching defensive line at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California.
The 30-year-old spent a total of seven years with the Panthers spanning 83 games. He started in 35 of them.
Over the course of his career he amassed 15.5 sacks, 24 quarterback hits and seven forced fumbles.
With Horton and Olsen gone, the big question is now what the Panthers will do with quarterback Cam Newton.
There have been multiple reports of him wanting to stay in Carolina, but ultimately he seems to understand that it is unlikely to happen.
The Panthers will likely continue to make big roster moves over the next few months as the organization transitions into the Matt Rhule Era.
