Panthers Lose Nic Scourton to Torn ACL on Day 1 of Training Camp

The Panthers cannot catch a break. Nic Scourton tore his ACL on the first day of training camp. He is out for the 2026 season.

Scourton, the 21-year-old second-round pick from 2025, went down during Thursday’s practice and was carted off. The MRI confirmed the worst. Torn ACL in the right knee. Season done. He will be placed on injured reserve and begin the rehab process almost immediately.

He will seek a second opinion, but barring something surprising, this is a full lost season.

Who Scourton Was Supposed to Be

Scourton had a promising rookie year. He started eight games for Carolina in 2025 and finished with five sacks, 27 tackles including seven for loss, one forced fumble, and one pass defended. Those are solid rookie numbers from a Day 2 pick.

He entered this camp as a projected breakout candidate. The Panthers pass rush needed a real threat opposite Jadeveon Clowney and A’Shawn Robinson. Scourton was the answer. He had put on weight in the offseason, worked with pass-rush specialists, and was on track to be the team’s leading sack producer.

None of that matters now. He starts his second NFL season in a knee brace.

What This Means for the Panthers Defense

Carolina was already a bottom-five defense in the NFL last year. Losing your best pass-rushing prospect on Day 1 of camp is catastrophic. The team now has to scramble for edge help before Week 1.

Free agency options are limited. Ryan Kerrigan is retired. Justin Houston might come back if the price is right. Yannick Ngakoue is available but has not been effective in two seasons. The trade market has some options: Emmanuel Ogbah, Preston Smith, maybe a call to Cleveland about a Za’Darius Smith replacement.

General manager Dan Morgan has to be aggressive here. Bryce Young is finally hitting his stride at quarterback and Carolina cannot waste his development by fielding a defense that gets shredded weekly.

The Bigger Picture

Nic Scourton was supposed to be a cornerstone. He is 21. He will rehab, come back next August, and hopefully pick up where he left off. Modern ACL recoveries are not the career-ender they used to be. Nick Bosa came back. Jamal Adams came back. Chase Young came back. Scourton can too.

But the Panthers have earned their reputation as the unluckiest franchise in the NFL. Injuries torpedo them every year. Coaching hires flop. Draft picks bust. Owner David Tepper’s tenure has been a disaster in most fans’ eyes.

This is another chapter in that same story. A bright young player. A brutal knee injury. A season derailed before it starts.

Head coach Dave Canales has to hold this locker room together. Practice on Day 2 has to happen. The team has to move forward. But losing your best young pass rusher this way is the kind of gut punch that follows a franchise around all year.

Carolina fans deserved better. Scourton deserved better. Now it is about damage control and a long rehab.
