Panthers DE Nic Scourton Suffers Knee Injury Just as Rookies Report to Camp

The Carolina Panthers had one job on the first day of rookie report. Keep everybody upright. They could not do it.
Second-year defensive end Nic Scourton suffered a knee injury on Tuesday as rookies reported to training camp. The severity is still being evaluated. There is no update on how much time he is going to miss.
The timing could not be worse. Scourton was expected to be one of the Panthers’ most important pieces on defense, and the young defensive line is one of the few areas where Carolina actually has real optimism.
Scourton was a top pick by the Panthers in the 2025 NFL Draft after a productive career at Purdue and then Texas A&M. He put up 5 sacks and 15 quarterback pressures as a rookie. Those are solid rookie numbers for a defensive end, and the arrow was pointing up.
The Panthers built their offseason plan around getting more pressure on the quarterback. They pushed all the chips in on defense in the offseason, adding depth in the front seven and prioritizing pass-rushing help. Losing a Year 2 building block before Week 1 even shows up on the calendar is exactly the kind of setback this franchise cannot afford.
Bryce Young and the offense finally started to click late last season. Carolina has real hopes that Dave Canales’s second year running the show is going to produce a jump on that side of the ball. If the defense cannot get off the field, none of that matters.
Head coach Dave Canales was cautious in his brief comments about the injury. The Panthers have been through enough injury drama that they know better than to speculate before the MRI results come back. Nothing has been officially released about severity or timeline.
For fantasy players, keep an eye on this one. If Scourton misses time, it opens up rotational reps for the rest of Carolina’s defensive front. Also watch how the Panthers approach the defensive end market. If Scourton is going to miss real time, do not be shocked if Carolina looks at a veteran addition before September.
There is also a bigger picture here. The Panthers have been through a rough stretch of injuries over the past few years. That has been part of what has held back this rebuild. You cannot develop a young roster if the top of your depth chart is always in the training room.
Scourton was supposed to be a foundational piece. The Panthers still believe he is. But the first day of rookie report should not include losing your Year 2 defensive end to a knee. That is the kind of sequence that turns a hopeful offseason into a cautious one in a hurry.
All the noise around Carolina’s training camp so far has been positive. Better roster, better plan, better feel around the building. Now the injury reports start, and the reality of the NFL sets in.
The Panthers will hope for the best on Scourton. The team has to plan for the worst. That is how it works in this league.
