Sean Payton Reveals Drew Brees’ 2020 Status With Saints

Sean Payton revealed Drew Brees’ 2020 status with the Saints during a recent interview.

While all eyes are on Tom Brady and his looming decision with the New England Patriots, Brees is facing something similar.

The New Orleans quarterback is an unrestricted free agent and his status with the organization is currently very much in doubt.

He could re-sign. He could go play elsewhere. Or he could retire.

All three are viable options.

During a recent interview, Payton was asked what he thinks will happen with Brees in the new year.

The Saints coach did not even hesitate.

“I see him on our field this upcoming season,” Payton said.

Payton’s comment comes on the heels of an ESPN report noting that Brees had received at last one offer from a TV network.

It is not immediately clear whether the future Hall of Famer is legitimately considering TV work at this stage.

“Drew has not spoken with them or anyone about any new opportunities,” Adam Schefter reported.

“Until such time as a decision is made about next season, he will not be engaging in any conversations regarding or considering any new opportunities.”

New Orleans finished 2019 with a 13-3 regular season record and made it to the playoffs. Unfortunately, once there, the team was bounced in the Wild Card game by the Minnesota Vikings.

Part of what is complicating this entire situation is that Brees’ backup, Teddy Bridgewater, is also an unrestricted free agent. And he wants to start somewhere.

Bridgewater went 5-0 with the Saints when Brees was out with an injury and showed he could legitimately take the team over at some point.

Brady is 40 years old, and his playing days are winding down.

New Orleans management needs to decide whether its willing to let a talent like Bridgewater walk knowing that their days with Brees are numbered.
