New England Patriots Making Surprising Cut

The New England Patriots are making a surprising cut.

Although Tom Brady has captured most of the headlines thus far, the Patriots have a lot of decisions to make in 2020.

Regardless of where the future Hall of Famer chooses to set up shop, be it New England or elsewhere, changes to the roster will still need to be made.

Bill Belichick’s squad is fresh off a 2019-20 campaign that saw the team play in its first Wild Card Game in a decade, and subsequently lose the outing.

With special teams coordinator Joe Judge gone to lead the New York Giants and offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia retiring, the coaching staff will change.

The same holds true on the player side of things. Beyond Brady, Matthew Slater, Jamie Collins, Kyle Van Noy and Devin McCourty are all free agents.

The Patriots will reportedly have something in the $44 million range to spend on free agents this year.

If the team hopes to give Brady the massive payday he wants and still re-sign top-tier talent, moves will need to be made.

According to ClutchPoints, one of those moves may be cutting Mohamed Sanu.

Sanu was brought in from the Atlanta Falcons for a second-round pick to fill the team’s gaping hole at receiver. The idea was that he could somewhat patch up the void left behind by the retirement of tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Unfortunately, that did not end up happening.

Sanu recorded 207 yards and one score on 26 catches in eight outings with New England. Those were not the totals the organization was hoping for when he was acquired.

Next season the 31-year-old will carry a cap hit of $6.5 million. His production simply does not warrant that sort of payday.

As such, ClutchPoints notes that it would make a lot of sense for the Patriots to cut ties at this stage and move on.
