Why the Ravens Backed Out of the Maxx Crosby Trade: Inside the Failed Deal

The Baltimore Ravens were supposed to land Maxx Crosby. Then their medical staff took a look, and everything fell apart.
According to multiple reports, the Ravens were lined up to acquire the All-Pro pass rusher from the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this offseason. Baltimore reportedly backed out after medical concerns surfaced during Crosby’s physical. The deal that was supposed to give the Ravens a championship-level edge rusher instead became one of the strangest non-trades of the year.
Crosby is one of the most relentless pass rushers in the NFL. He plays with an unmatched motor, racks up tackles for loss, and has been a Pro Bowl staple for the Raiders during some of the franchise’s most frustrating seasons. He was the kind of player Baltimore needed to push their defense into elite territory and pair with the rest of their talented front seven.
The medical red flag is the most important piece of this story. NFL teams do not back out of trades for stars lightly. If the Ravens’ medical staff was concerned enough to nuke a deal, the issue is real. Something either showed up on a scan, a previous injury raised long-term concerns, or the projected recovery timeline did not match what the Raiders were claiming.
For Crosby, this is a brutal situation. He showed up willing to be traded, only to have a high-profile deal fall apart for reasons largely outside his control. His value just took a real hit in the eyes of the rest of the league. Every team that talks to the Raiders now is going to ask the same question. What did Baltimore find that made them walk?
The trade talk is not dead. Crosby should draw renewed interest before the start of the regular season. But the conversation will not heat up until he gets on a field and shows he is healthy. That probably means August or even later, depending on how camp goes and what Las Vegas decides to do with him.
For potential suitors, the math gets interesting. The Cowboys, Bills, Bears, and Patriots have all been linked to pass rusher needs. If any of those teams find themselves in contention midseason and one piece short, Crosby becomes the natural target. The asking price drops every week the deal stays unmade.
The Raiders are stuck in a tough spot. They have a star player whose trade value just dropped. They have a head coach trying to build something new. They have a fan base that has watched too many talented players leave for nothing in return. Holding Crosby into the season is the worst-case scenario for asset management.
For the Ravens, the dust has settled and they have to look at alternative moves. Pass rusher depth is always at a premium. Baltimore has the picks and the cap space to make another move if the right target comes available. The fact that they pulled the plug on Crosby tells you they have specific medical and risk standards, which is actually a sign of a smart front office.
The bigger lesson from this saga is that NFL trades are never done until they are done. Medicals matter. Timing matters. One scan can derail months of planning, and that’s how the league has always worked.
Crosby’s next move is going to set the tone for the rest of the trade season. Stay tuned.
