Falcons Pass Rusher James Pearce Jr. Is About to Have a Massive Year. Here’s Why

The Atlanta Falcons are quietly putting together one of the most interesting young defenses in football. The breakout candidate is James Pearce Jr., and 2026 might be the year he becomes a star.

Pearce was at minicamp for his physical on Monday and is fully cleared to participate, ending months of low-level speculation about his health entering the season. The 22-year-old edge rusher missed the final three games of his rookie year with a foot injury, but he is now reportedly at full strength and motivated.

If you missed his rookie year, here is what to know. Pearce was the 26th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Tennessee. He finished his first NFL season with 6.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits in 14 games. That is not eye-popping by elite pass rusher standards, but it is exactly what you want from a rookie edge in his first year.

The numbers also lie about how much better he can be. Pearce was the 26th pick because he was a project. He has the kind of body type, length, and speed that takes time to develop. Year one was about adjustment to the NFL. Year two is about taking the actual leap.

The film tells the story. Pearce has elite bend, plus speed off the edge, and the kind of long arms that NFL coordinators specifically want to add to a defensive line. What he lacks is technique, hand usage, and run defense discipline. All of that is coachable, and all of that is what the Falcons coaching staff has been working on with him this offseason.

Raheem Morris is the right head coach for this. Morris was a defensive backs coach before becoming a head coach, and his understanding of defensive structure is elite. Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has built defenses around developing pass rushers before, most notably with the Jets when Quincy Williams emerged.

The Falcons need Pearce to take the leap. Atlanta finished last year 25th in the NFL in sacks. They drafted edge rusher Zion Williamson Jr. in the second round of the 2026 Draft. They signed veteran edge Bud Dupree in free agency. The pieces are there, but Pearce has to be the headline guy.

The roster around Pearce is also worth talking about. The Falcons have a top-five quarterback in Michael Penix Jr. They have skill weapons in Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts. They have a defensive backfield that includes A.J. Terrell, Jessie Bates III, and 2025 first-rounder Travis Hunter. This is a roster that is talented enough to win the NFC South.

The NFC South itself is wide open. The Buccaneers are in transition. The Saints are rebuilding around Kellen Moore. The Panthers are still finding themselves. Whoever wins the divisional pass rush battle wins the division.

Pearce has the most upside of any defender on any of those rosters. If he hits double-digit sacks in 2026, the Falcons make the playoffs. If he gets to 12 or more, they could host a playoff game.

The minicamp appearance was symbolic. Pearce is back, he is healthy, and he is ready to be the guy. The Falcons defense will go as far as he takes it.

This is the breakout you should be circling on your fantasy football board. The Falcons defense is about to be loud again.
