Jalen Hurts Says He and AJ Brown Are ‘Really Good’ Despite Eagles Trade Rumors

Jalen Hurts walked to the podium at Eagles OTAs on Wednesday, picked up his drink, and proceeded to give the most carefully worded answer imaginable about AJ Brown.

“Picked the right question to sip on, huh?” Hurts cracked when reporters inevitably asked about his star receiver. Then he downshifted into damage control.

“There’s an if, obviously, it’s been a lingering thing. But nothing can replace all the greatness we achieved together. Nothing’s changed since we last spoke at the end of the season. We’re really good. I saw how beautiful the pictures came out of his wedding, and I’m very happy for him and his wife and his family.”

Translation: things are weird, but we are pretending they are not weird.

The Brown trade rumors have been a slow drip all offseason. Reports from inside the building have made it clear that Brown is frustrated with the offense, frustrated with how he is being used, and possibly frustrated with Hurts himself. Last year’s chemistry never quite recovered after the team’s late-season collapse.

The Eagles’ offense looked broken for stretches of 2025. Brown was visibly upset on the sideline more than once. The “miss stopped running” comment from Brown earlier this offseason made national news because it was the first time the public got a look at how strained things had become.

Now the Eagles are heading into 2026 with one of the league’s best receivers possibly checked out. That is not a recipe for a Super Bowl run, which is what Philadelphia expects every year now.

The trade chatter has centered on AFC contenders. Some reports have linked Brown to teams looking for a true number one receiver after the draft, and there is a logical fit on several rosters. Brown has not publicly requested a trade, which gives the Eagles leverage, but he has also not exactly been doing PR work on Howie Roseman’s behalf.

Hurts’ answer matters because it sets the public-facing tone. If he had said anything cold or even neutral, the rumor mill would have gone nuclear. By keeping it positive and focusing on Brown’s personal life, Hurts gave the front office room to either trade Brown or keep him without anyone losing face.

The smart bet here is that Brown gets traded. Eagles GM Howie Roseman has never been afraid to move on from expensive veterans, and he has stockpiled draft capital specifically so he can make blockbuster moves. Brown’s contract is also team-friendly enough that the return would be substantial.

The other possibility is that this all blows over once camp starts and the wins start piling up. Hurts and Brown have done that before, and a hot start tends to make everyone love each other again.

For now, file Hurts’ answer under “I have to say this.” Whether he believes it is a separate question entirely.
