Bobby Wagner to the Bengals? Why Cincinnati Should Sign the Veteran Linebacker

Bobby Wagner is still a free agent, and that should not be the case. The veteran linebacker put up a strong 2025 with the Washington Commanders and is somehow still on the open market in June. Now Cincinnati is being mentioned as a potential landing spot, and the move would make a ton of sense.

The Bengals have been searching for defensive answers for the better part of three years. Their offense is loaded. Joe Burrow is one of the best quarterbacks in football when healthy. Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins remain elite receiving threats. The team has done its job on offense. The defense keeps holding them back.

Adding Wagner would not fix everything. It would help.

Why Wagner Is Still Worth a Signing

Wagner is 35 now, but he played at a high level last season. Linebackers can age well when they have football IQ, and Wagner has more of it than just about anyone in the history of the position. He has been making smart pre-snap reads and finishing plays for over a decade, and the brain does not slow down even when the body does.

For a team like the Bengals, his presence in the middle of the defense would do two things. First, he would shore up run defense, which Cincinnati has been bad at. Second, he would mentor the younger linebackers on the roster, which is the kind of cultural lift this franchise has been missing.

The price tag should also be reasonable at this point in the offseason. Veterans who hit June without a deal usually take less than they would have in March. Wagner needs a contender. The Bengals need a leader. The deal almost writes itself.

The Bengals’ Defensive Problem Is Real

Cincinnati has not been able to put together a complete defense in years. The pass rush has been inconsistent. The secondary has had stretches of brutal play. The linebacking corps has lacked a true alpha. Wagner would not be the solution to all of that, but he would address the third issue immediately.

The AFC is more competitive than ever. The Patriots just added AJ Brown. The Bills are still the Bills. The Chiefs are working through the Mahomes recovery, but they remain dangerous. The Ravens are right there. To win the AFC North, the Bengals need every advantage they can get on the defensive side of the ball.

Wagner has played in big games. He has been on Super Bowl rosters. He knows how to lead a locker room through the grind of an NFL season. That experience is not a luxury for a team like the Bengals. It is a requirement if they want to compete for a championship while Burrow is in his prime.

The phone call should already be happening. If the Bengals are serious about contention, signing Wagner is a low-risk move with a real upside. If they pass, another contender will pick him up, and Cincinnati will spend Sunday afternoons watching him make plays in someone else’s jersey.

Bobby Wagner needs a team. The Bengals need a leader. June 2026 is the perfect time to put those two things together.
