Nick Bosa Says He’s ‘Pretty Far Along’ in His ACL Recovery: When Will He Be Back?

The San Francisco 49ers got encouraging news on their best defender. Nick Bosa, who tore his ACL early last season, says he is ‘pretty far along’ in his recovery and expects to be ready around training camp.
Bosa has been out on the field at OTAs doing a lot of work, though he is being smart about the pace. ‘I tend to push things quicker,’ he admitted, which is why he and the team are intentionally taking it slow this time around.
That self-awareness is exactly what you want to hear from a player coming off a major knee injury.
Experience Is Working in His Favor
This is not Bosa’s first rehab. He tore his ACL back in 2020 as well, and he says that experience has helped him understand when to push and when to back off. In 2020 he admits he pushed harder than necessary. This time he is dialing it back at the right moments.
That kind of veteran wisdom matters. Athletes who have been through a long recovery before tend to navigate the second one better because they know the process and they trust it. Bosa sounds like a player who has learned from his own mistakes.
The other good sign is how he feels physically. Bosa said his body feels ‘pretty darn good’ and even joked that this is the best his fingers have felt in 20 years. When a player is healthy enough to crack jokes about feeling fresh, that is a confidence indicator.
What This Means for the 49ers
A healthy Bosa changes everything for San Francisco’s defense. He is one of the premier pass rushers in the league, and the 49ers were a different unit without him last season. Getting him back near full strength by Week 1 is enormous for their ceiling.
The plan to have him ready around training camp makes sense. There is no need to rush him through May and June workouts when the goal is a full 17-game regular season. The 49ers want him fresh in September, not gutting it out in shorts and helmets at OTAs.
San Francisco has the roster to contend in the NFC. The defense, in particular, lives and dies with its pass rush, and Bosa is the centerpiece of that. His return is arguably the most important storyline of their offseason.
So far, the recovery is tracking exactly how the 49ers would want. Slow, steady, and aimed at having Bosa wrecking offenses again when the games count.
