Browns QB Battle: Why Deshaun Watson Has the Edge on Shedeur Sanders for Week 1

The Cleveland Browns quarterback competition is the story of their spring, and right now it is Deshaun Watson who holds the edge over Shedeur Sanders for the Week 1 starting job.

Watson, who is 30, has reportedly hit it off with new head coach Todd Monken, and that chemistry matters. When a veteran quarterback clicks with a new play-caller, the staff tends to give him the first crack at the job.

The practice structure backs that up. In early individual drills, the quarterback order ran Watson, Sanders, Gabriel, then Green. Watson has been up first in almost every session at OTAs, and he is currently the betting favorite to win the job.

There is a wrinkle worth noting. During install drills, the roles flipped, with Sanders working with the first team and Watson with the second. So the staff is clearly giving the rookie real reps and a real look.

That tells you Cleveland is keeping its options open, but the early body language points to Watson. Teams do not put a quarterback first in nearly every session unless they want to see if he can hold the job.

The case for Watson is experience and the coach connection. He has started plenty of NFL games, and a new offense often leans on the veteran who can run it cleanly from day one.

The case for Sanders is upside and the future. Rookies do not always win jobs in the spring, but the ones who flash early can force a coaching staff’s hand by training camp.

My read is that this is Watson’s job to lose right now, but it is far from settled. OTAs are non-contact, and the real separation happens once the pads come on in camp and the hits get real.

If Sanders outplays Watson when it counts, Monken will have a decision that comes with franchise-altering stakes. Cleveland has spent years searching for stability at the position, and the choice between a veteran and a rookie will shape the season.

For now, the depth chart leans Watson. The chemistry with the new coach and the first-team reps in individual work give him the early advantage.

Keep an eye on the install-period reps, though. The fact that Sanders is running with the ones there says the Browns have not closed the book on the rookie. This battle has a long way to go.

One more thing to remember: quarterback rooms can change in a hurry. An injury, a hot stretch in camp, or a single strong preseason can flip the entire pecking order. Cleveland will keep this competition open until someone forces the issue.
