Brandon Aiyuk Trade Rumors: Wideout Wants Out of San Francisco

The Brandon Aiyuk era in San Francisco is over. The 49ers have made it clear he will not play another game in the Bay Area. Now it’s just a matter of finding the right trade partner.
This situation went sideways fast. Aiyuk suffered a devastating knee injury that changed everything about his future with the franchise. In response, the 49ers voided the guaranteed money in his 2026 deal. That’s a corporate way of saying goodbye.
Aiyuk hasn’t taken it quietly. He wants out, and he has a very specific landing spot in mind: Washington. He’s been vocal about wanting to reunite with his college teammate Jayden Daniels and catch passes for the Commanders.
That’s not just a fun narrative. That’s a real football fit that makes sense for everyone involved. Washington has the cap space, they have the young quarterback, and they have a receiver room that could use a proven number one option.
Jayden Daniels is coming off a Rookie of the Year campaign that turned the Commanders into an actual threat. Adding a receiver who Daniels already has chemistry with from their Arizona State days would accelerate that offense in a hurry.
Terry McLaurin is a great player, but he’s a legit WR1 on a passing offense that could use two dangerous options. Pair McLaurin and Aiyuk on opposite sides with Daniels distributing? That’s an offense defensive coordinators will lose sleep over.
For the 49ers, this trade is about getting something back for a player they’ve already decided to move on from. San Francisco is in a weird cap situation with Brock Purdy about to get paid and Christian McCaffrey aging. Freeing up money and getting draft capital in return is the smart play.
Aiyuk was a first-round pick for a reason. Before the injury, he was one of the best route runners in the league and a legitimate top-tier NFL receiver. His 2023 season was a genuine breakout, and even with the knee concerns, the talent hasn’t disappeared.
The question is what kind of package the 49ers can extract. A player coming off major knee surgery with voided guarantees doesn’t command the haul he would have 18 months ago. But the tape is there, the age is there, Aiyuk turned 27 in March, and any receiver-needy team should be circling.
Washington is the perfect landing spot, but they aren’t the only team that should be interested. The Steelers, Chiefs, and Patriots all have receiver holes worth filling. Even so, the college connection with Daniels puts Washington at the front of the line.
The Commanders should be aggressive here. Adam Peters has been swinging on veteran additions to accelerate the timeline around Daniels, and Aiyuk fits that pattern perfectly. Sending a Day 2 pick plus a conditional selection would get this done.
Training camp is where this trade needs to happen. Aiyuk needs time to build chemistry with his new team, and the 49ers need to move on before this becomes a full-blown distraction. Both sides know the clock is ticking.
This trade has to happen. Washington gets its second star receiver, San Francisco gets picks and cap relief, and Aiyuk gets to play with the quarterback he actually wants to catch passes from. Everybody wins.
