Bo Nix is expected to be full go when the Denver Broncos open training camp, and if you are a Broncos fan, that is the best news of the offseason. The broken ankle he suffered in the Divisional Round win last January is behind him. The recovery went the way Denver hoped, and the second-year quarterback is ready to build on the leap he already made.
Nobody saw the 2025 Broncos coming. Nix was a rookie. Denver had spent years wandering through the post-Peyton wilderness with a rotating carousel of quarterbacks. Then Sean Payton found his guy, the offense clicked, and the Broncos won their first playoff game in a very long time. Nix played big in that Divisional Round win before the ankle went sideways.
The injury felt like a cruel twist at the moment. A rookie quarterback finally puts it all together, wins a playoff game, and gets hurt in the process. But the timing turned out to be manageable. He had the entire offseason to rehab. He got the surgery he needed. The rehab went to plan. Now he is walking into camp at full strength.
The whole plan in Denver hinges on Nix taking the next step. Year one was the appetizer. Year two is where the offense is supposed to fully open up.
Sean Payton coaches quarterbacks harder than anybody in the league not named Andy Reid. He has been playing the long game with Nix from the moment he drafted him. Payton was famously public about wanting a specific type of quarterback for his offense, and Nix was the guy who fit the description. Now Payton gets his second training camp with him, this time as an established starter coming off a playoff run, not a rookie learning the system on the fly.
Look at what Nix did in year one, ankle and all. He improved every month. He got better in the red zone. He got better on third down. He got better on the road. By December he looked like a quarterback who had been in the league for five years. Then he won a playoff game as a rookie, which is a thing very few players get to say they did.
The pieces around him are there. Denver’s offensive line is legitimate. The receiver room got real investment. The defense is one of the better units in the AFC. If Nix takes even a modest leap in year two, this is a team that can win the AFC West.
That is the bar now. Winning the division. The Chiefs are still the Chiefs, but the run of Kansas City dominance in that division cannot go on forever, and Denver is closer than anybody outside the building might think. Sean Payton has his quarterback. The quarterback is healthy. The roster is built to win now.
Training camp is not going to answer every question. But watching Nix run the offense on day one without any restrictions is going to be a moment. The last time he was fully healthy on a football field, he was leading a playoff drive. Now he gets to pick up where he left off.
