Atlanta Falcons Coach Abruptly Retires

An Atlanta Falcons coach abruptly retired this week.

The team’s tight ends coach Mike Mularkey is stepping down and calling it a career after an interesting season in Atlanta.

This marked Mularkey’s second time with the organization. He was also Atlanta’s offensive coordinator from 2008 to 2011.

Thanks in no small part to Mularkey’s guidance, tight end Austin Hooper had a really special year in 2019. All in all, he recorded 787 yards and six touchdowns on 75 receptions.

“I’ve been blessed to do this for a long time and have a lot of great memories from the game I love,” Mularkey said.

“I’ve also missed a lot of time with my family who I love and who has supported me so much throughout my career.

“I am looking forward to spending even more time with them and making even more memories.”

During his stint a decade ago as Atlanta’s offensive coordinator, Mularkey’s schemes allowed the team to finish second in the NFL in rushing.

Head coach Dan Quinn, who many thought might get fired this past season, had nothing but praise for Mularkey.

“What an awesome career for Mike,” he said.

“When you look back at his 25-year coaching career, you’ll not only see a great coach, but you’ll also see an unbelievable human being and leader.

“Mike has been a great asset for our organization and for me personally. We wish he and his family well and congratulate him on a well-deserved retirement.”

This past season the Falcons finished with a 7-9 record, but did end the year on a four-game winning streak.
