Troubling Details About Texas Coach Chris Beard’s Arrest Emerge
Texas Longhorns men’s basketball coach Chris Beard was arrested early Monday morning over a felony domestic violence charge.
According to the Austin Police Department, Beard stands accused of “assault by strangulation/suffocation.”
Although details regarding what precisely occurred here remain sparse, the Austin Police Department told KXAN that it was “called to the 1900 block of Vista Lane at 12:15 a.m., Monday for a disturbance.”
Police arrived at the scene and said that “they found a woman who said Beard choked her.”
It remains unknown what led to this purported escalation of violence.
Beard posted a $10,000 bond and was released Monday afternoon.
In a statement to the American-Statesman, Beard’s lawyer professed his client’s innocence.
“Coach Beard is 100% innocent of these charges,” the lawyer said.
“He should never have been arrested. The complainant wants him released immediately and all charges dismissed. It is truly inconceivable.”
Obviously basketball isn’t all that important in the grand scheme of things, but it is worth noting that Beard’s 2022 had been going great up to this point.
The Longhorns are 7-1 on the year and off to their best start to a season in a long time. They’re presently ranked 7th in the AP Poll.
Beard, on a personal level, is also getting paid $5 million per year and is on a seven-year deal.
By any objective measure, he should be living the life.
Just goes to show, though – you never know what is happening in someone’s personal life.
Although Beard’s contract is guaranteed, there is a provision in his deal that permits Texas to fire him for cause. It will be interesting to see how that plays out here.
This has been a crazy year in college sports. Between a staffer ramming a football player with her car for cheating on her, the claims about what truly led to Deion Sanders leaving Jackson State University, and that Texas fan who stripped her clothes off after a loss – it has been one thing after another.

In that respect, this most recent incident is just par for the course.
Obviously more information about Beard’s arrest will come in the next few days.
When it does, hopefully all wronged parties end up getting the justice they deserve.
