Pistons Legend’s Brutal Assessment Of Cade Cunningham

Cade Cunningham came into the NBA this year widely regarded as the favorite to claim Rookie of the Year honors.

Thus far, he has been something of a mixed bag. For the season he is averaging 15.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game.

However, during his last six games, he is averaging 20.8 points per game while shooting 45 percent from the field, 46 percent from three and 81 percent from the charity stripe.

As is the case with most rookies, he has been hot and cold in the early going.

That said, it appears Detroit Pistons legend Dave Bing has seen enough to make a definitive ruling.

“I think he’s starting to come into his own right now,” he said.

“I was worried about him early on in terms of his shooting, but he’s been playing very, very well. So I think he’s going to be an All-Star-caliber player. I don’t think he’s a guy you build your team around. We still got to get that guy. We don’t have it yet, in my opinion. I also think our weakness is our backcourt. We got to get a good point guard.”

It’s fair to say that Cunningham probably hasn’t been as impressive thus far as Evan Mobley or Scottie Barnes, but it’s still early. Someone like Trae Young for example didn’t really get hot until the second half of his rookie season, and that is a pretty common trajectory.

This has been an eventful year for the Pistons, so it’s understandable if patience isn’t at an all-time high. That said, Cunningham needs more time before a true assessment of his skills can be made.
