Nuggets Named Intriguing ‘Outlier’ Team for LeBron James in Free Agency

An ESPN insider just added a wild new team to the LeBron James free agency race, and the name might surprise you. The Denver Nuggets have been floated as an intriguing “outlier” team, giving basketball fans permission to dream about a LeBron and Nikola Jokic pairing.
LeBron officially became a free agent after deciding not to return to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Warriors and Cavaliers are considered the frontrunners for his services. Cleveland is the emotional favorite. Golden State is the co-star story. Denver would be something else entirely.
The basketball fit is a fever dream. Jokic is the best passer at the center position we have ever seen. LeBron is one of the best passers at the wing position we have ever seen. Put those two on the same court and offenses would need entirely new schemes to handle it. Every action becomes a decision. Every screen becomes a mismatch.
Defensively is where it gets tricky. Jokic is not a rim protector. LeBron is 41 years old and cannot chase around wings for 36 minutes anymore. Aaron Gordon becomes even more valuable. Christian Braun becomes even more valuable. But the ceiling on that offense is so high that the defense might not matter.
The cap math is the real hurdle. Denver does not have the space to sign LeBron outright. They would need salary going out. Michael Porter Jr.’s contract keeps coming up in these discussions. Moving him to create room for LeBron is theoretically possible but complicated.
Denver has been trying to reload around Jokic for years. They won a title in 2023 and have been searching for the right complementary pieces since. Adding LeBron to that core would give them a legitimate two-year window to try to win another one.
The catch is what happens after LeBron leaves. Whatever they trade away and whatever cap flexibility they use up will affect their future. That is a real cost. But for a chance to see Jokic and LeBron team up? Some fans would sign that trade in a heartbeat.
LeBron himself has to be intrigued by the idea. He has spent his career trying to team up with elite talent. Playing with the best center in the world in the twilight of his career is a legitimate closing chapter option.
Realistically, this is a longshot. Cleveland and Golden State still make more sense from a cap, family, and legacy standpoint. But the fact that a real ESPN insider even mentioned Denver tells you the Nuggets are at least thinking about it.
The Western Conference is going to be a bloodbath either way. Denver is already a contender. If they somehow pull off this move, they become the clear favorite. If they miss and LeBron goes elsewhere, they still have Jokic. That is not a bad fallback.
Do not bet on it happening. But do not dismiss it either. Weirder things have happened in NBA free agency.
