Luka Doncic Gets Brutally Honest About Kristaps Porzingis Trade

The Dallas Mavericks traded Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards on Thursday for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans.

Porzingis getting dealt in the final seconds of the NBA Trade Deadline signaled the conclusion of one of the most disappointing duos in recent memory.

The Mavericks initially acquired Porzingis with the hope that he would serve as a competent running mate to Luka Doncic. There was a lot of optimism in the early going. Unfortunately, it quickly waned when it became apparent that Porzingis just couldn’t stay healthy and, worse yet, he and Doncic did not like each other.

Late Thursday evening, Doncic reflected on his teammate getting traded.

“Obviously, we’re going to miss KP,” Doncic said, per Tim MacMahon of ESPN. “We were building something great here. It didn’t obviously work out. I wish him the best, and we’ve got two new guys who are welcome. Bertans is a great shooter. Dinwiddie can put the ball on the floor and he can score. The NBA is a business.

“He went through a lot with the injuries. I think this year, he was way better. Like I said, the NBA is a business, and I wish him the best in the future.”

Obviously Doncic is saying all the right things right now, but the reality is that he and Porzingis were not fans of one another. They genuinely seemed to hate each other at certain points.

When you couple that with Porzingis’ injury-proneness – you get a recipe for disaster.

This year alone Porzingis had already missed 21 out of 55 games. Clearly he wasn’t a figure this Mavericks group could consistently rely on.

Dallas has big plans on how to help Doncic going forward. Whether or not they’ll ultimately be able to execute on them in the foreseeable future remains to be seen.
