Naji Marshall Locks in $52.2M Mavericks Extension: Dallas Rewards the Move That Actually Worked
The Dallas Mavericks did something rare this week. They paid a role player exactly what he is worth, and did it without any drama.
Naji Marshall signed a three-year, $52.2 million fully guaranteed extension that will take him through the 2029-30 season, per ESPN. The deal starts at $18.2 million in 2027-28, then descends to $17.3 million and $16.7 million in the final two years. Descending money keeps him trade-eligible if the situation ever calls for it.
Marshall was entering the last year of his previous contract at $9.4 million. He earned this bump. Coming off a career year in 2025-26 where he averaged 15.2 points and 3.3 assists on 51 percent shooting from the field, he became one of the most useful two-way forwards in the West. He also became the guy Cooper Flagg needs next to him.
That last part is the important part. Dallas is building around Flagg as the future centerpiece. They need a specific type of role player around him. A big wing who can defend multiple positions, hit the corner three when the offense creates one for him, and not need touches to feel involved. Marshall is exactly that guy. That is why the Mavericks have resisted every trade offer that has come in for him this offseason.
Nico Harrison has taken a beating in the last two years for how he has managed the Mavs’ roster. Some of that criticism has been earned. This deal is not one of those moments. Locking up a proven, ascending, useful two-way forward at a reasonable annual number is textbook front office work.
The 6-foot-8 Marshall came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Xavier and grinded his way into a rotation spot with the Pelicans before Dallas signed him in the 2024 offseason. He arrived in Dallas with something to prove and immediately became a favorite of the coaching staff for his defensive versatility. Then the offense came. His shot has improved every year he has been in the league.
The bigger picture is what this says about the Mavs’ plan. They still have Klay Thompson’s $17.5 million on the books and only 15 roster spots to fill from 16 guaranteed contracts. Something has to move. Marshall is not the something that moves. Naji is the piece that stays.
Kyrie Irving is still recovering from injury. Anthony Davis is still Anthony Davis with all that entails. The Mavericks have to compete in the West while also protecting the runway for Flagg’s development, and that is a hard balance to strike. Every dollar you spend on a supporting cast piece has to be justified.
$52.2 million over three years for a 27-year-old versatile forward with real upside? That is justified.
