LeBron James is not letting Sam Darnold have the last word. The four-time MVP and newest member of the Philadelphia 76ers responded publicly to comments made by the Seahawks quarterback about his surprise free agency decision to join Philly.
Darnold had questioned the fit on a podcast earlier this week, wondering aloud whether James at 40 could really coexist with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey given how the Sixers already play. James saw the clip and responded on X with a mix of humor and clear irritation, essentially telling Darnold to stick to football and let the basketball players figure basketball out.
The exchange got attention because Darnold is not typically a guy who wades into other sports takes, and James is not typically a guy who lets media criticism from outside the NBA go unanswered. It is the kind of small offseason drama that would not exist in July if either party were on a team playing games.
Underneath the sniping is a real question. Can James, in year 23, actually make the 76ers better than they would have been without him? The bet Philadelphia made was that he can. Nick Nurse has been publicly explaining how James will fit as a secondary playmaker, letting Maxey initiate more often and using James in delayed screen actions to attack switches.
Skeptics point at Embiid’s fragile availability and question whether adding another aging star with his own health question marks moves the needle. Believers point to what James did with the Lakers in 2020 and 2023, arguing that his floor as a playoff performer is still higher than anyone else on the market.
Darnold’s take was closer to the skeptic view, and James clearly did not like being told his ceiling. That is a pattern going back to the beginning of his career. James has always answered outside criticism, whether it came from Skip Bayless, Charles Barkley, or in this case, a quarterback who had a great 2024 in Minnesota and a decent 2025 in Seattle.
The Sixers will get their chance to answer these questions on the court starting in October. Until then, this is what NBA offseasons look like. Big signing. Fit questions from every corner. Star responds on social media. Rinse and repeat.
The one thing James still has that separates him from every other player is the ability to make any story about him personally. Whether that is a strength or a distraction depends on how the season goes. If Philly hits its ceiling and reaches the Eastern Conference Finals, the Darnold exchange will be forgotten. If Philly stumbles, this becomes another data point in the LeBron-loses-focus-on-Twitter narrative.
For today, though, James got the last word. He usually does.
