The Lakers have been trying to solve the center position for what feels like the entire decade. Daniel Gafford might be the answer.
Multiple NBA reports this week have connected Gafford to the Lakers as a top offseason trade target. The framework is straightforward. Dallas is rebuilding around Cooper Flagg. Gafford does not fit the timeline. The Lakers have a wing prospect, a defensive forward, and a draft pick they are willing to give up. The 26 overall in the 2026 draft, Dalton Knecht, and Jarred Vanderbilt is the package that keeps surfacing.
The Lakers need this more than people realize. Luka Doncic has reportedly told the front office that he wants a real rim running, lob catching, rim protecting center to play alongside Anthony Davis. Doncic spent his time in Dallas operating with Gafford as his pick and roll partner. He knows what the fit looks like. He knows it works. He wants the Lakers to recreate it.
Gafford is exactly that player. He is 6’10”, 265 pounds, and he plays with motor. He sets real screens. He finishes everything at the rim. He protects the rim defensively. He does not need plays called for him. He does not need touches. He is the kind of role player who makes stars look better, which is the most valuable archetype on any contender.
The Mavericks math is interesting. Masai Ujiri took over the front office and immediately signaled that the team was going to be patient and disciplined. Gafford is on a team friendly deal. He could be a part of the next contending Dallas team. But the rebuild is going to take three to four years. Gafford is 26. By the time the Mavericks are ready to compete again, his prime will be over. Trading him now for a younger player and assets makes more sense than waiting.
Knecht is the interesting piece for Dallas. The Lakers second year wing showed flashes as a rookie. He is a high level shooter. He has the size to defend wings. He fits cleanly next to Cooper Flagg as part of the long term plan. If the Mavericks believe in his development, the trade makes sense for both sides.
Vanderbilt is the salary matching piece. He is a real defender on a manageable contract. He could come off Dallas’s books at some point and clear room for the next move. He could also be a real contributor for the rebuild. Either outcome works for Ujiri.
The Pacers and Celtics have also been mentioned as potential Gafford destinations. Indiana is trying to add size around Tyrese Haliburton. Boston has been collecting big men. Neither team can match what the Lakers can offer in terms of immediate young talent. The Lakers are the favorites to land him.
The Lakers urgency is the biggest factor. JJ Redick needs immediate roster help. Davis is dealing with his usual injury concerns. Doncic is in the early prime of his career and wants to compete now. The front office cannot keep waiting for the perfect deal to fall in their lap. If Gafford is available, the Lakers are going to push hard to get him before any other team enters the conversation.
The risk is that Gafford never quite becomes a high end starter. He is a really good role player, but he is not a star. The Lakers are giving up real assets for a player who has clear ceiling. If LeBron James is no longer in the picture next season, the Lakers are betting that Doncic, Davis, and Gafford is a foundation that can compete in the West.
That is the bet. It is a defensible one. The Lakers need a real center. Daniel Gafford is a real center. The math works.
