Kawhi Leonard is a Toronto Raptor again. Seven years after leading the franchise to its only NBA championship, Leonard is heading back to Canada in a trade that shocked the league even though the writing had been on the wall for weeks.
The framework was simple. Leonard’s representation told other teams that he only wanted to sign an extension with the Raptors if the Clippers were not going to keep him. Los Angeles saw the writing, opened negotiations, and Toronto pounced.
The Raptors gave up a package built around Immanuel Quickley, Ochai Agbaji, and multiple first-round picks. It is real value. But given what Kawhi means to that franchise, and given that Toronto had been stuck in the middle of the Eastern Conference for three straight seasons, the front office decided the moment was right.

His health remains the story every day. Leonard has played 82 games exactly once in his career. He has missed extended time to a variety of leg injuries. The Raptors know all of this. They are betting that a lower-mileage season, a more controlled load, and Canadian healthcare give them 60 quality games and a monster playoff run.
For the Clippers, this is the end of an era. Six seasons of trying to win with Kawhi and Paul George, then Kawhi and James Harden, produced exactly zero conference finals appearances. Steve Ballmer is not the type to celebrate a rebuild, but the front office has run out of ways to justify continued patience.
Los Angeles now leans on Harden, and the young players they got back in this trade. It is a full pivot to a new era, and it is likely a painful one. The Clippers were built to win now. They will not be winning much of anything now.
The Raptors immediately become one of the most fun teams in the Eastern Conference. Leonard next to Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, and a young supporting cast gives them a real ceiling. If Leonard plays 70 games at anything close to his old level, this team could win two playoff series.
Nick Nurse is not there anymore, but new head coach Darko Rajakovic has proven he can maximize offensive talent. Kawhi walking through his door is the best coaching development he could ever have hoped for.
