Every free agency has a wild moment. This year, the wild moment is a sitting governor trying to sell LeBron James on the Philadelphia 76ers over dinner in New York.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro was eating at ZZ’s this week with the Clintons when LeBron walked in. Peter Hamby of Puck News broke the story, and Shapiro reportedly used the chance encounter to lobby James on coming to the Sixers.
Normal? No. Effective? Maybe more than people think.
LeBron has done everything possible to keep this decision quiet. He is not taking meetings. He is not sending signals through his usual media pipeline. So the only pitches getting through are the ones that happen face to face, in restaurants and at events like Fanatics Fest, where Sixers owner Josh Harris also cornered him for a “brief, friendly” chat.
The Sixers are the most aggressive team in this race, and it is not close. Tyrese Maxey is leading the recruiting inside the locker room. Joel Embiid has reportedly reached out. Jaylen Brown has made his interest known. Now Harris is doing it in person, and Shapiro is doing it at ZZ’s with the Clintons watching.
Compare that to how quiet the Cavaliers and Heat have been. Neither team has produced a headline like this in weeks. LeBron respects noise when it comes from the right places, and Philadelphia has been the loudest room in the league for a month.
Shapiro is not just any local politician. He is one of the most talked about Democrats in the country and a potential 2028 presidential candidate. Whether or not LeBron cares about that, the fact that Shapiro even took the swing tells you how much political and cultural capital the 76ers are willing to spend on this pursuit.
Some will read this as desperation. It reads more like a coordinated push. Philadelphia is treating this like a campaign, and Shapiro is now part of the ground game.
The math still matters. Philadelphia has salary cap flexibility, a young franchise star in Maxey, and an Embiid who wants one more real shot before his body gives out. They can offer LeBron the biggest role of any contender. That is what closes the deal, not a governor.
But the theater is the theater. James is a man who has always understood the value of moments, and this one plays. A future presidential candidate personally recruiting him to a franchise carries weight in a way phone calls do not.
The Cavaliers are still the sentimental favorite because of his ties to Ohio and his son Bronny. The Heat make basketball sense because of Erik Spoelstra and the culture. But Philadelphia keeps showing up in ways the others have not.
If LeBron picks the Sixers, expect Shapiro to take a victory lap the size of the Ben Franklin Parkway. If he does not, this was still one of the more memorable free agency stories in years. A governor tried to close LeBron over dinner. That is a first.
The decision is still coming. Adam Silver has openly begged him to make it. Whenever it lands, Philadelphia can at least say they left nothing on the table.
