Jaylen Brown’s 741 Brand Is Bigger Than Sneakers: He’s Carrying Out Kobe’s Unfinished Vision

Jaylen Brown turned down more than $50 million in endorsement offers from major sneaker companies. He launched his own brand instead, called it 741 Performance, and when people asked why, he pointed straight to Kobe Bryant. That answer tells you everything you need to know about what Brown is actually building here.
Brown explained the origin clearly. Around 2019, he read an article about Kobe exploring the idea of his own sneaker company, Mamba Brand. Kobe wanted to give athletes better percentages, better equity deals, a real stake in the company’s growth. The vision never materialized. Kobe died on January 26, 2020, and Mamba Brand died with him before it ever had a chance to exist.
Brown decided he would pick up where Kobe left off. “I really created it because I was inspired from Kobe,” Brown said. “Trying to empower athletes to have better deals, better percentages.” He unveiled 741 Performance on September 25, 2024, and the brand has been building steam ever since.
Traditional sneaker endorsements pay athletes a flat rate or a royalty percentage, but the athlete never owns a piece of the company. Brown looked at that model and decided it wasn’t good enough. He’s betting on himself and building something he controls.
Kobe would have appreciated all of it. Bryant spent the post-playing years of his life building businesses and trying to create systems where the people doing the work got a real share of the value. Brown is doing exactly that, with 741 as the vehicle. Kobe started the blueprint. Brown is building the house.
