Heat and Trail Blazers Lead Giannis Antetokounmpo Pursuit Despite Major Hurdles

The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade sweepstakes has settled into a two-team race. One of them might not even have a chance.
The Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers have emerged as the most aggressive pursuers of Antetokounmpo this offseason, per NBA insider Kurt Helin. Both organizations are pushing hard, but only one of them is realistically positioned to make the deal happen.
Miami is the favorite. The Heat have a known mutual interest with Antetokounmpo, who has reportedly liked Pat Riley’s organizational style for years. They also have the assets to construct a competitive offer. Bam Adebayo is the centerpiece, and his combination of age, defense, and contract status makes him an appealing return piece for the Bucks.
The Heat can also throw in multiple first-round picks and contract filler. Their proposed package likely includes Adebayo, a future first-round pick, and either Andrew Wiggins or Duncan Robinson for salary matching. That is a package that would seriously interest Milwaukee.
The Trail Blazers situation is far more complicated. Portland has been linked to Antetokounmpo for weeks, with new owner pushing hard to land the franchise face. The problem is geography and competitiveness. Antetokounmpo wants to play in the Eastern Conference. He wants to play for a contender. Portland is neither.
“It is unlikely,” said one source close to the situation, per multiple reports. “He is not going to a play-in West team.”
That is the cold reality for the Trail Blazers. They have the assets to make a trade work financially, including Scoot Henderson and multiple first-round picks. What they do not have is the kind of roster or geography that appeals to a 31-year-old superstar trying to win another title before his career window closes.
Other teams that were briefly in the mix have already been ruled out. The Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly will not move Evan Mobley to construct a deal. The Denver Nuggets do not have the asset depth. The Dallas Mavericks are committed to their current core. The Charlotte Hornets do not have the on-court infrastructure to attract Antetokounmpo’s interest.
The New York Knicks are an interesting case. They have the assets and the geography. They have made the NBA Finals this year. But the team is not going to blow up its roster in the middle of a championship run to chase a player who would replace the chemistry they have built over two years. The Knicks are out.
So the race comes down to Miami versus Portland. The Heat have the inside track because of mutual interest and roster fit. The Trail Blazers are pushing because their new ownership group wants to make a splash and prove they are committed to building a competitive team. Both organizations have approached the Bucks with serious offers in the last two weeks.
Milwaukee is in the driver’s seat. They can take the best offer between the two and pit them against each other to drive up the price. They can also hold out for additional teams to enter the mix once the Finals end.
The timeline is short. The NBA Finals end somewhere between June 10 and June 19. The NBA Draft is June 23-24. Antetokounmpo will be traded sometime in that window, almost certainly.
The Heat are going to fight for him. The Trail Blazers are going to throw everything they have at the wall. Antetokounmpo and the Bucks are going to control the outcome.
Expect Miami to win this race. Expect Portland to come up short despite a real effort. And expect the conversation about Antetokounmpo’s future to finally end within the next three weeks.
